This world is extremely disappointing and surprising when it comes to real-life criminal stories, as people around the globe have some of the most disturbing stories to tell that will blow one’s mind.
1. The Disappearance of Bobby Dunbar
On August 23, 1912, Percy and Lessie Dunbar loaded up their two young sons and left their home for a camping trip nearby Swayze Lake.
That night, four-year-old Bobby Dunbar strayed away from the family’s tent and disappeared. A search party soon tracked Bobby to the lakeside, and authorities concluded that he had fallen into the water and drowned.
For two years, the details of his disappearance, the search for him, how he was found, and the trial of his kidnapper was all front-page news, reported breathlessly across the country.
An eight-month investigation was launched by Bobby’s parents in the hope of finding him. A few newspapers wrote stories about the incident as well. The mystery of this famous disappearance was solved almost half a century later. Given all the suspense and drama, this story truly deserves a television show.
2. The Dual Life of Lawrence Bader
Bader was born December 2, 1926, in Akron into a good and stable family. He had a promising career, a beautiful wife, three children and another child on the way as he got married to his University class fellow during his brief enrollment.
But soon, things took a complete 180 when it became apparent that Bader had taken out a loan he could not pay from his salary.
He never returned from his fishing trip, leading to one of the more bizarre disappearances of recent history. Bader rented a boat at the Rocky River that afternoon despite being aware of the upcoming storm and shoved off.
The following day, Bader’s ship was found on the rocks at Perkins Beach. Bader was nowhere to be found. Speculations of all sorts made it to the public chat and gossip, leaving the Akron residents shocked.
The Flamboyant Fritz Johnson
Four days after the disappearance, a fascinating, debonair and well-dressed man entered the Roundtable Bar on the corner of 19th and Harney Streets in Omaha named John Fritz Johnson.
The man became a radio station announcer, sports director of a television station, and one of the best known, best-liked and most flamboyant personalities in Omaha. Larry Bader was declared legally dead in an Akron court in 1960.
In 1964, a visitor at a show in Nebraska from Akron witnessed the Nebraska archery champion.
The man reached out to Bader’s brothers from Akron. They declared that the man was their long-lost brother. Johnson’s fingerprints were sent to the FBI for comparison with Bader’s, and they matched. Johnson claimed to have no memory of his life as Lawrence Bader.
Johnson lost his job and marriage and was reduced to working in a bar in Omaha. This story sure did get us all feeling empathetic for Bader, aka Johnson.
3. Creepy Love Story of Carl Tanzler
Carl Tanzler was a German-born radiologist and an eccentric, lonely man who had abandoned his wife and children to work in the United States Marine Hospital in Key West, Florida. He fell in love with Maria Elena, who was brought into the hospital for a tuberculosis checkup.
After their first meeting, Tanzler got sick, too and not just ill but also lovesick for this woman. In 1927, he left his family in Zephyrhills and got a job as an X-ray technician in the Marine Hospital on Key West.
Having met Maria Elena after three years, Tanzler realized that she was the image of a loved one from his childhood visions.
Carl Tanzler showered Elena with gifts and tried to cure her in vain. The illness won over the passion and love. The young 21 years old woman died of tuberculosis complications on October 25, 1931.
On one of his night visits, the lovesick doctor took the body of his loved one from the crypt on a toy trolley.
The body of the deceased was covered in silk soaked in wax and plaster that replaced the decayed skin; her bones were connected with piano strings and wire, her body was stuffed with rags, a wig from hair cut before death and glass eyes were what the dead body of Elena looked like for the seven years after her death as Tanzler shared a marital bed with her until his arrangement was uncovered.
To protect Elena’s remains from Tanzler, her relatives buried her in an unmarked grave. Until his death in 1952, he kept a full-size wax doll with Elena’s likeness.
4. The Marriage of Valerie Spruill
Valerie Spruill is the Ohio woman who unknowingly married her biological father. She was raised by her grandparents from when she was 3 months old and was told that her grandfather was actually her father and a close family friend, her mother. She became aware of this hoax at the age of 9.
Valerie had three kids from her first marriage. A man named Percy, who surprisingly was Valerie’s biological happened to be her second husband.
Percy was almost 15 years older than Valerie. According to Valeria, she was unsure whether Percy knew he was wed to his biological daughter before his death in 1998.
This devastating discovery was made through a DNA test using Percy’s hair after his death. Valerie chose to tell her story in order to find her other sibling from her father. As devastating as it is, Valerie seems like an extraordinarily brave woman and her story deserves to be recognized.
