The guillotine was a horrific execution method. It was first used during the French Revolution. Surprisingly, the guillotine was designed as a less painful way of execution. Before the invention of the guillotine, criminals were punished by beheading them with swords and daggers. This way of punishment was more painful because the sword stroke did not promise confirmed death.
The public executions became a way of entertainment for the French people. The French government then stopped public slayings to avoid chaos. French seemed to enjoy the concept of the guillotine as they made guillotine toys and jewelry. The machine reigned for 189 years and was officially abolished in September 1981.
